Propecia (Finasteride)

Finasteride, a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor is sold by Merk under the brand name Propecia as a treatment for hair loss in men.

In recent studies now surfacing, Propecia is making men impotent. In some studies up to 23 percent of men who have taken or are taking Propecia have complained about a lowered sex drive and permanent impotence.

According to the reports published by "The Journal of Sexual Medicine", the problems may linger even after men have stopped taking Propecia. Dr. Irwin Goldstein states: "as hair loss treatments that may negatively impact their sexual life, possibly for a prolonged time after stopping the medication".

Side Effects may include:

  • Lower sex drive
  • Loss of libido
  • Permanent Impotence


From Merck's own literature it is warned:

"In general use, the following have been reported: breast tenderness and enlargement; depression; allergic reactions including rash, itching, hives and swelling of the lips and face; problems with ejaculation; testicular pain; difficulty in achieving an erection that continued after stopping the medication and, in rare cases, male breast cancer. You should promptly report to your doctor any changes in your breasts such as lumps, pain or nipple discharge. Tell your doctor promptly about these or any other unusual side effects."

Other side harmful side effects of taking Propecia may include prostate cancer and according to Health Care Canada, breast cancer in men. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a safety announcement to warn health care professionals that the Warnings and Precautions section of the labels for the 5-alpha reductase inhibitor (5-ARI) class of drugs that includes Propecia has been revised to include new safety information about the increased risk of being diagnosed with a more serious form of prostate cancer.
